Early goals did for Basingstoke once as again as a quickfire double for the visitors was enought to ensure they won the three points.
Basingstoke were let off after three minutes as an offside flag denied Leamington an opening goal following a free kick from out wide on the right hand side but Basingstoke didn’t heed the warning and three minutes later were 1-0 down. The ball fell for striker Ahmed Obeng just inside the box and his scuffed volley took a deflection on it’s way into the bottom corner. It got worse for the hosts after ten minutes of the match as Leamington doubled their lead. Rob Thompson-Brown pounced on a heavy touch from Joe Gater, cutting inside and driving a low shot through Alex Tokarczyk’s fingers from twenty yards.
Basingstoke responded and after a penalty claim had been waived away, Aaron Jarvis poked a cross from Marcus Johnson-Schuster wide from six yards before Michael Atkinson found himself in space on the edge of the box, only to try to pass to the far post and watch the ball roll out for a goal kick. Leamington attacked at the other end and sent multiple set pieces into the box throughout the first half but the home defence stood firm and dealt with the pressure.
HALF TIME: 0-2
Leamington pressed Basingstoke when not in possession and made it difficult to create anything as they closed the game out. Courtney Baker-Richardson had time to control a low cross at the near post but scuffed a volley at Tokarczyk and Jack Edwards glanced a header just wide from a right wing corner. At the other end all Basingstoke could muster was an overhead kick from Aaron Jarvis that looped over the the bar and a blocked shot from recent signing Tobi Adekunle inside the box as Leamington held on to secure the victory.
