Basingstoke Town from: J.Lane, Overington, Holden, Foyle, Harding, Foreman, Dunn, Perrin, Richards, Manamike, Sheedy, Carr, Wilson, Ward, Butler
A young team was selected to play an Under 17’s Salisbury side. The match was split into three-30 minute thirds to allow coaches the opportunity to give feedback to players during intervals.
Basingstoke started well and their fluid play brought about numerous opportunities. With 10 minutes gone, Ropa Manamike found himself in behind the Salisbury defence and coolly slotted home to make it 1-0 Basingstoke Town. In this period, Elliot Richards was running the show with some excellent wing play down the left flank. The first period ended pretty much the same, Basingstoke in control and limiting Salisbury to a few half efforts.
The start of the second period saw some Basingstoke changes and as a result they lost their momentum. As Salisbury started to control the midfield they became evermore threatening with a few chances going begging. Midway through this period a foul just inside the edge of the penalty area by Joe Carr gave Salisbury a chance to equalise from the spot which they dually dispatched to equalise, 1-1.
Basingstoke made some readjustments to the team for the final third period and as a result took more control over the game. Simon Dunn in Centre midfield alongside Jake Perrin dictated play, spraying balls out to each wing as Basingstoke pressed for a winning goal- but it didn’t come. The game ended 1-1 but Basingstoke left Salisbury claiming a moral victory!
Manager thoughts….. This highlighted that the future of Basingstoke Town is a bright one. A team full of 16 year olds that have only training together for three weeks, put up an amazing performance against a well organised and disciplined Salisbury team. It is just a shame that the score line didn’t reflect the dominating performance.
